Temporary Driving License for International Tourists at BIA

(Department of Motor Traffic)

Tourists arriving in Sri Lanka can obtain their Temporary Driving License immediately upon landing, making it easier than ever to explore our island at their own pace.

Requirements

• Foreign driving license (only full driving licenses are considered for conversion; probationary, provisional, temporary, or learners' licenses are not accepted).
• If the driving license is not in English, a translation should be submitted.
• Valid passport and visa.

Importance

• Foreign license must be valid for a period of one year or more from the date of conversion.
• Maximum validity period of a temporary driving license is 5 months.
• Conversion is applied for motorcycle and light vehicle classes only.
• All restrictions and conditions in the foreign license are applied (e.g.,corrective lenses, automatic transmission, hearing aid user, etc.).

What should you possess?

• Driving license of your country of residence with a validity period of atleast one year.
        Note: If it is not in English, please provide an English translation certified by the relevant embassy.
• Passport, valid visa, or entry permit.

Benefits

• You can drive motorcycles and light vehicles for up to five months during your stay.

Issuing Temporary Driving Licenses to Visitors (Non-Citizens of Sri Lanka)

Issuing Temporary Driving Licenses to Visitors (Sri Lankan Citizens)

For a period of more than three months and up to six months	18,000
For a period of more than six months and up to twelve months	24,000

Other Driving License Services

• Issuing a Driving License to a citizen of Sri Lanka who is the holder of a driving license or any equivalent thereof issued outside Sri Lanka - LKR 30,000
• Issuing a Driving License to a person other than a citizen of Sri Lanka who is the holder of a driving license or any equivalent thereof issued outside Sri Lanka - LKR 60,000


• Issuing a Driving License to a person other than a citizen of Sri Lanka - LKR 45,000
• Renewal of a Driving License issued to a person other than a citizen of Sri Lanka - LKR 15,000
• Issuing a duplicate Driving License (destroyed, defaced, or damaged) to a person other than a citizen of Sri Lanka - LKR 15,000
• Issuing a duplicate Driving License (lost) to a person other than a citizen of Sri Lanka - LKR 30,000

Location

• Visit the Department of Motor Traffic Counter located at the Arrival Walkway(next to the SPAR supermarket) at BIA.
